    About Brash Brewing

Getting there: [MAP] Google Maps places 508 a bit off. If you're heading West on Crosstimbers, be in the right lane. Immediately after some apartments, you'll see a small driveway with a tall wooden fence and then some more apartments. That driveway is where you want to be! [pic]

Beers: Be warned - Brash exclusively makes strong beers. If you're going to have more than a couple, you should definitely have a DD or use Uber!

Most of the tables at Brash are picnic style tables so a playmat would definitely be a good idea.

    Prizes:

@Islandswamp suggested we give away crack but unfortunately, I was unable to source any in time for this tournament. Perhaps next time.

Brash has offered a free crowler of beer to our first place winner.

We will be taking a small rake to pay for some physical prizes.

At least one player outside of the top 4 will win a door prize at the end of the event, so be sure to stick around and play out all your matches!

Here's a sample of some of the things we'll have to give away this weekend.

We have a Stanley-Cup-esque playmat. Each tournament, the playmat is be inscribed with the date, location, and winner of the tournament, along with some space for the player to add a doodle. This playmat will be passed each week to the new champion to play with at the next tournament! It currently looks a little something like this:

If anyone is planning on coming from out of town, please contact one of the Houston crew if you'd like us to arrange something post-Magic. After most big Legacy events, we generally go out as a group to avail ourselves of the city's excellent food and drink options, and we'd love to show them off to you, too!

If you or someone you know needs a deck and is too lazy to use a printer or doesn't know what they want, we have a few available to borrow. You're welcome to take them home. We only ask that you buy us a new pack of sleeves so we can replace the deck.

We now require deck lists. We do not perform deck checks but we want lists so we can post them. Have bad handwriting? Use the decklist generator here! Please don't put anything on your decklist that you don't want to be seen publicly as your decklist may be scanned and uploaded in full.

  • Hey! Would you be willing to give some pointers to a rookie looking to organize a similar event? I am in Memphis, TN and we have new brewery madness happening here that could be a cool place to try and get some Vintage off the ground in the midsouth (cause yeah, eternal wasteland doesn't begin to cover it). This seems like the kind of event that people could get behind with some publicizing.

    Two things.

One. I have some experience running swiss events via chess tournaments but NONE with Mtg. Is there a post here, or some general rundown on how to best put together a casual 100% proxy vintage event for the well meaning enthusiast?

Two. Do people buy and drink and otherwise make it desirable for the good brew folk to host the players? I guess I would worry about a bunch of folks occupying tables for an entire day and not buying enough to make it worthwhile for the innkeepers.

Any advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance for the patience if this has been answered elsewhere.

We're coming up on one year of doing this on one form or another. I should really write up a whole post about this at some point.

In terms of pairings, you can use the official WotC pairings generator but it's against their ToS. We use MTGArena. It can easily be handled on your phone but I prefer to use my laptop so I can blow it up and make it easier for people to read if they want to.

Other stuff for "running it," it would help if you had some more specific questions. The only other kinda hard thing would be handling buy-in and payout. Note that your venue may restrict your ability to do this in particular ways.

We do $10 entry cash only. I say exact change only but the ATM in my neighborhood spits out fives so I grab some in case anyone needs change. Payout is in cash plus some cards. The brewery kindly throws in a crowler for first.

Definitely speak to your possible venue first! They may be able to do some things to make it easy for you or let you know when might be best.

In our case, Brash is generally nearly-empty for the first few hours on Sundays. I think at the beginning, they were just glad to have some money coming in at that time. When they get busier, we try to condense the games into only a couple of tables so everyone has places to sit.

Take care of your venue. That means clean up after yourselves, tip your bartenders, offer them your extra pizza and so forth. Be flexible for them. If they've got something coming up on the calendar that is going to make your event difficult, ask if they'd like you to cancel or move. They'll probably appreciate in. In the case of last weekend's care show, Brash offered to pull out another table just for us if we needed it.

I hope this has been helpful!

If you have any other questions or want to turn this into a full conversation, feel free to email me: sam AT seemsgood DOT com (that goes for anyone reading this and wanting similar help)

  • Thanks for the info! I'm going to do a little recon and I may reach out via email with some more tournament specific questions. It would be nice to have a sticky or something by those in the know on "so you wanna host a vintage event" maybe :) In any case many thanks!
