TMD Open 18-April 22, 2017- TO Report

  • Preamble- If you don’t read any of this report, please at least go to:
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/455436901463091/
and share as much feedback as possible. That new group is for discussion of my next (date not yet determined event), but I want to store feedback there so it is in a place I will remember to make suggested improvements for the next event when planning time comes around. Oh and while I like my ego stroked as much as the next person, that isn’t what I am looking for here. I want any suggestions for improvement, no matter how large or small, for any part of the event. (More giveaways, cut to top 16, more James Hangley, Friday night side event, louder microphone, more crowns to wear, etc...literally any suggestions you can think of) Thanks!

TMD OPEN 18 – Official Tournament Organizer Report

TMD Open 18 is officially in the books. Hard to believe that it has been roughly 15 years since the first TMD Open. The community of people involved with Vintage MTG never fails to leave me in awe. You are a wonderful group of people and I am happy that I get to put together something that people enjoy.
This was a particularly fun event to plan due to the “Quest for the crown” theme that ran through everything. Buying that royalty themed tablecloth brought me back to being a 5 year old and getting a themed birthday. It was fun to plan, and I only hope that WotC gives me another cool theme to play off from some element of a set like Clues or Monarch tokens.
As always I want to apologize to anyone who I couldn’t give my full attention to with the craziness of the day. On top of that, I still feel like there are people I know and sometimes in the craziness of it all my naturally-bad-with-names self gets even more out of whack. Please accept my apology if I seemed to not be fully with you at any point in the day.
The standings after 7 rounds of swiss looked like this:

    Other thoughts on the day:
The AC and the sound system both seemed to be better but are continued works in progress. I will always strive to make the experience better and better.
Joe Pace worked with some other people to collect a whole big stack of Monarch tokens to give to me. They wanted to show their appreciation and have me take the painting prize. I would never want to take something for myself that I am using as a prize. It defeats the whole purpose of what I try to do with my events. What I will say is that the thought behind the act, a very kind, heartwarming gesture was still 100% effective. I was very touched and would like to thank those of you who were involved in the collection of the tokens! It was remarkably nice!
The after party was a little more segmented than the previous year. I think maybe a big get together dinner Friday night might be a better way to add some comradery into the event. Perhaps we can use the hall for a small Friday night event as I setup the hall for Saturday and go out for dinner and drinks afterwards.
I got coverage streaming, but not recording and still no commentary. I’d like to do that in the future and believe that there may be an opportunity to make it happen with some volunteers. If you would like to be a part of helping improve this part of the event, please let me know as the next event is being planned.
The table setup seemed to make movement around the room fairly easy. I will try to use a similar setup moving forward.

Big thanks to a number of people:
CJ Stambaugh, Chris Ocampo, Joe Achille, and Trevor Gulley for their excellence in judging. They went above and beyond in their professionalism, diligence, and they added a lot to the event experience. And big congrats to CJ for pulling the Beta Time Walk.
Phil Michener, former student and up and coming magic pro, for running the concessions.
Scott Hughes for helping setting up and taking things down.
Art Atwood for being such a wonderful host on behalf of the VFW.
Top Deck Games and Black Magic Games for being terrific vendors and for continuing to support Vintage. Thanks Calvin for the donation of many great door prizes that were given away during the day and as additional prize support for magic trivia.
The crew from Wisconsin that travelled all that way to play in the event. It was a blast to meet you guys and I hope if it is in the cards that you might make it back.
And of course my beautiful wife, Karen Robillard who helped me keep my sanity through some tough parts of the planning process.

Until next time…may you enjoy just a single Gush and Gitaxian Probe.

    Thanks,
    Ray

  • I lost to jared in the t4, Geras was runner up

  • Yeah...just saw that. Fixed it. Thanks

  • I may not be seeing it but is there a link to watch the video coverage for the event?

    @Chiaroscuro No, per Ray's writeup:
"I got coverage streaming, but not recording and still no commentary."
