Yaaaayyyy thread necro.

I'm interested in Delver, but the archetype's been pretty quiet in 2018. There are a few lists on mtgtop8 from earlier this year, but for the most part, it seems like it's been supplanted by Pyromancer and UWR lists.

Is Delver just worse than the other Xerox decks? What would a 2018 Delver list look like?

@stuart This one placed 11th at SCG Con. I think it gains a card or 2 from Guilds of Ravinca

Cheers @moorebrother1! The white splash here makes sense - Cavern's not something I usually see in Delver, but it works.

@stuart I played RUG delver to 6-0 in vintage side events at EW and then a top 4 in an event the week after. It’s not dead at all. The problem is no one wants to break outside of comfort zone. Why play a 1/1 when you can draw half your deck with PO turn one lol. I enjoy delver a lot in vintage and I think it’s a good choice for sure.

@ghost588 I'm pretty sure I was one of your victims - I got stomped by Tarmogoyfs when I was playing a terrible Powered Colorless Eldrazi deck.

Any chance you've got a list to share?

@stuart sorry I suck at responding. Yes- that was me! If you’re friends with the guy I beat round one on PO and got salty about losing to the green machine!! But my list was:

4 delver
4 goyf
2 young pyro
1 snapcaster
4 fow
4 misstep
1 fluster
1 daze
4 preordain
1 brainstorm
1 ponder
1 recall
1 cruise
1 dig
1 time walk
4 bolt
2 grudge
1 gush
1 probe
4 strand
3 scalding
3 volc
3 trop
2 waste
1 island
1 strip
1 lotus
1 sapphire
1 ruby
1 emerald

I really like Delver. I like that it is aggressive, plays blue cards, Pyroblast, Null Rod and Wasteland.

I considered playing it at Champs but decided to go with Survival instead because I was wary of playing a fair deck in a large tournament (and Survival is the new hotness, etc) but I had a decent amount of success (in the small sample size that I was able to play) with both URg and URw online. I was especially liking URg:

I went 33-7 with a few different versions of URg Delver in August and September of this past year. Some leagues, a lot of tournament practice matches. I especially beat up on DPS and Outcome but I didn't play Shops much and didn't trust that matchup because of that.

I want to revisit Delver as an alternative to the Arcanist decks that have arisen.

Dan Sollazzo T4'd the SCG event last month with a UW Delver deck, featuring Lavinia: https://www.tcdecks.net/deck.php?id=30807&iddeck=262019

Given the emergence of Narset and Karn, I'd like to explore replacing Preordains with Tutors and lowering the curve to fight the planeswalkers from the ground.

URb Delver

4 Delver of Secrets
1 Dreadhorde Arcanist
1 Narset, Parter of Veils
1 Snapcaster Mage
4 Young Pyromancer
-11
1 Daze
4 Force of Will
4 Mental Misstep
1 Pyroblast
1 Spell Pierce
1 Thoughtseize
-12
4 Lightning Bolt
1 Shattering Spree
-5
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Demonic Consultation
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Dig Through Time
1 Gitaxian Probe
1 Gush
1 Ponder
1 Preordain
1 Time Walk
1 Treasure Cruise
1 Vampiric Tutor
-12
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
2 Flooded Strand
1 Misty Rainforest
2 Polluted Delta
1 Scalding Tarn
1 Island
1 Underground Sea
4 Volcanic Island
1 Strip Mine
3 Wasteland
-20

Sideboard
3 Pithing Needle
3 Ravenous Trap
3 Yixlid Jailer
2 Pyroblast
1 Fatal Push
3 Shattering Spree

Notable exceptions:

Dack Fayden
-Removal of off-color moxen makes it more difficult to cast
-Gets Pyroblasted and Narseted
-Has always gotten Revoked
-Dredge should not be leaving/bringing in Hollow Ones to steal
Off-color Moxen
-Idea of deck is to get under, not overpower, planeswalkers
Merchant Scroll
-Not feasible without off-color moxen
Preordain
-Replacing with tutors minimizes impact of Narset and finds specific threats/answers

Notable inclusions:

Demonic Consultation
-I've always been a big fan of this card in fair decks. Getting 3&4ofs at instant speed for 1 mana is strong.

This deck is soft to Oath. Other than that, I feel comfortable against the rest of the field.

I'd appreciate any thoughts and if anyone has been testing Delver as a pivot away from the Planeswalker mirrors.

Best,
Dave
