the cost of cards

Vintage has a cost of entry issue. Most of you will say that there is no issue because of proxies and I am not going to argue with you on that. I will say that MTGO has gotten expensive.
I have been thinking a lot about my experience with Vintage last year. I was not able to play any paper games aside from test playing with my brother. I played a lot of MTGO through MH2 release.
I do not use a rental service for several reason and I do try to keep up in Vintage which is usually easy but MH1 and MH2 has made this very hard due to card cost on MTGO. Commander Legends has also made building decks more expensive on MTGO
The issue to me trying to keep a digital collection and a paper collection. If you minus out the reserve list cards, the cost of a deck right now in paper is all MH1 and MH2 cards. This is the same in Legacy and Modern.
I bought a lot of MH1 and MH2 in paper because I play a lot of paper Modern. This is great because I can also play these cards in Vintage and Legacy. But this sucks when it comes to MTGO.
I guess there may be some solution by renting cards but I am getting frustrated by this. I want to play in paper and I play many formats so usually the paper investment is worth it to me. The cards are normally much cheaper on MTGO but the new Modern Horizons staples are making this very hard to justify.
I am getting to a point where I don't want to buy into MTGO anymore. Modern paper events are starting to fire again. Once this latest surge of Covid dies down there are several stores in my area that plan to do Modern events. I do not mind keeping a few decks on MTGO to play but being competitive is just getting too expensive and I'm not sure if it is worth it when I do not enjoy MTGO very much and I really just want to play paper.

@marland_moore I sold off my collection (and rebought) many times. The barrier to me is not so much that I can't afford the cards, but that I feel it's stupid for me to play with such expensive cards. Why would I shuffle up a ferrari that can get dinged in shuffling or have a beer spilled on it and "total" it? Those high priced cards would stay in my binder or a vault, and I'd only play with proxies.

@thewhitedragon69 I do not disagree with you on paper. That is a personal choice. But there are no proxies on MTGO and Vintage is now a digital format. I would almost argue it is a digital only format if you want to see your results posted.
Does owning digital cards have any value? Even if you rent that is an expense that I would prefer not to have.

Magic has become expensive. It's not just the cards but paying for leagues when your just starting out is rough too. It is what it is imo.
