TMD OPEN 17 Official Tournament Organzier Report

Preamble- If you don’t read any of this report, please at least go to:
and share as much feedback as possible. That new group is for discussion of my next (date not yet determined event), but I want to store feedback there so it is in a place I will remember to make suggested improvements for the next event when planning time comes around. Oh and while I like my ego stroked as much as the next person, that isn’t what I am looking for here. I want any suggestions for improvement, no matter how large or small, for any part of the event. (Get rid of that category in trivia, no more playsets of Ancient Grudge for prizes, chocolate flavored fortune cookies, give Will MaGrann a pedestal to sit on, etc...literally any suggestions you can think of) Thanks!

TMD OPEN 17 – Official Tournament Organizer Report

TMD Open 17 was a day like no other, a day when the heat index kept trying to pass the number of players. And despite the air conditioners doing their best to keep up, the 126!!! players that participated were never faltered in making this a great event. For those who saw me running around and sweating up a storm, I felt your pain!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for coming out and supporting the event. Forgive me if you have heard me tell this story a million times, but one of my favorite memories ever was the anticipation and then the sheer joy of attending the “RonCon” Vintage events held in Danbury CT way back in 1994 and 1995. Ron Kolbig provided such a memorable tournament experience that I have been trying to give that back ever since. So what makes it all worth it is you all giving your time and effort to come out and play this great game. Thanks everyone for making the trip out.
That said, unfortunately I am so busy during the day. There are so many of you that I could have sat and talked to for hours (Nick Detwiler, John Lessard, etc.), old friends I haven’t seen in forever (Keith Johnson, Ben Kowal, Neil MacDonald, etc.) and new friends I am still making. For those of you whose conversations were cut short or who I seemed preoccupied as we talked, please forgive me and don’t take it personally, I was not trying to be rude. I usually just have my head in 5 other places at once during these events.
Will Magrann told me at the onset of the day that he liked the crown, and he refused to give it up as he held the “King of the Hill” title throughout the day becoming the second ever player to win 2 TMD Opens and the first to do it back to back!

Other thoughts on the day:
I apologize that it was warm in the room. I went and played Bingo with all the little old ladies at this hall TWICE to make sure the AC was good. It was on high for the whole day, but the outside temperature was so unbearable coupled with 126 people in a room and it just wasn’t enough. I know the warm weather outside was beyond my control, but I still feel bad that it wasn’t as comfortable as it should have been in the hall.
I couldn’t get the computer to stream/record feature matches. I apologize for this…I had a few other people (Scott Hughes and Craig Masley) try to figure out the problem but none of us could get it to work.
Having the bar was a big plus! And I appreciate all of you handling it so maturely. There was no one(that I saw) he was so plastered that they caused a disturbance. Way to keep it classy, Vintage. Way to keep it classy!
Getting to your seat was way easier once we pulled the tables away from the wall. They probably should have been that way to begin with, so I apologize for the inconvenience when we did it during round 3.
Is there anyone with experience in acoustics and sound systems? I have always struggled with not blowing out people’s eardrums but also having everyone be able to hear announcements. There was a lot of yelling without the mike that I would like to avoid in the future so if an expert in this area could message me I would love to hear some advice.

We had multiple deckboxes with expensive amounts of cards turned in and recovered by their owners. It is refreshing being involved with a community of individuals with such high morals. Thank you.

Big thanks to a number of people:
CJ Stambaugh, Shawn Lucas, Steve Talbot, Jonathan Celso for their excellence in judging.
Phil Michener for running the snack bar.
Scott Hughes for helping setting up and taking things down.
Art Atwood for being such a wonderful host on behalf of the VFW.
Steve Talbot, Ross Merriam, Craig Berry, and Colin Watson for their generous donation of some of the door prizes.
Top Deck Games and Black Magic Games for being terrific vendors and for continuing to support Vintage.
And of course my beautiful wife, Karen Robillard who helped me keep my sanity through some tough parts of the planning process.

Until next time…may you always have a shuffle effect for your Brainstorms and may your sphere effects be plentiful.

Thanks,
Ray

I had an epic time, thanks again Ray!

@iamfishman the only thing I request is that you announce these in advance more, so I can try and make one.

I'm excited to see the lists. If anyone in the top eight wants to ship me a list hit me up.

thank you again for putting this tourney on.

When i wasn't getting my reality smashed , i got to meet a ton of great & classy people, and was fortunate enough to have my deckbox turned in after round 1.

A great event! So good to see people I haven't seen in a long time.

Already looking forward to the next one.
