Here's my brief overview of the Lodestone Golem restriction. I tried to keep a level head about things despite being frustrated with how the process appears to have gone.

Vintage landed hard on Cleveland, Ohio, last weekend. I'm sure some were dredging Christmas decorations up from the basement or doing their holiday shopping, while, paradoxically, some angry rogues were swearing mild oaths at the weather, recently turned cold and colorless. (Did that get everyone? Doesn't matter. I Mar-do what I want.)

Anyway, 14 hale and hardy gamers braved the early winter rain to come to Cleveland on December 1 and throw down in an exclusive Team Serious invite-only event. We had several bow out due to illness, and two (Jake Hilty and Steve Sasala) had alternating schedules and so shared the same Mardu Hatebears list, for a total of 13 decks in the metagame. There were mana cookies and burrito delivery, and the Jaeger and (ugh) Malort flowed like wine.

Commentary on the Twitch stream was provided by Andy "Brass Man" Probasco and Jimmy "The Allcat" McCarthy, an there was plenty of Middle School and Old School between rounds. We got the videos on YouTube so viewers can enjoy!

After five rounds of Swiss, a tie-breaker round to finish the top four, and the two elimination rounds, one player stood above the rest: Frank Singel, playing Lands.

Frank is now the second two-time winner of a Team Serious Invitational!

If the game is so bad why play it?

There have been a number of people through the years where I've wondered why they play Vintage instead of another format, or even Magic instead of another game. I think some people actually enjoy complaining.

Greetings from the virtual realm! Since no one's allowed to interact in person, we decided to host a Team Serious Invitational online with (hopefully) similar amounts of fun, camaraderie, and drinking.

On Friday, to kick things off, I hosted MTG Pub Quiz covering Magic: The Gathering trivia of all kinds, including movies with Magic card titles, remembering 1993, and drinking with Team Serious. A fun time was had by all, and congratulations to jonhammack (Jon Hammack), gloriouswolfman (Kaleb Woodward), and angui_82 (Fernando Anguiano) for a commanding 62 to 50 to 49 to 47 victory. They started hot in the Magic category and even identified a random drink I pulled from Jaco's Twitter feed by name!

On Saturday, we opened the tournament. We had 24 players representing at least six countries, five rounds of Swiss, and a cut to top eight. Plenty of companions throughout the event, including seven in the knockout rounds, one deck alternating between two of them. It looked hairy as we had thought playing the entire tournament via webcam in Discord would work, but five minutes into the event Discord had other ideas. Players were quick to react and we soon had games proceeding in Discord DMs, over Zoom, and even through Cockatrice.

In the end, Zias won using Shops Vines and no companion. Thanks to everyone who played, especially those in different time zones, and congratulations to the finalists. Thanks especially to Brass Man for the inspiration, as well as for hosting and commenting from his stream. Thanks also to Jimmy McCarthy, Jerry Yang, Tyler Etters, and others for helping players figure out their webcam setups and other options.

If you want to watch the coverage, it's available on Twitch from Brass Man!

The Team Serious Virtual Realm is planning on a U30 event in early July. This is an experimental format based on greatly raising the bar for restriction in Vintage.

If you remember the Mr. Burns Disease analogy from The Simpsons, it's like that. The current restricted list for U30 is below. If you're curious, the response to Lurrus's banning was to add Lion's Eye Diamond to the restricted list. Lurrus is legal as a four-of.

Ancestral Recall
Black Lotus
Demonic Consultation
Demonic Tutor
Imperial Seal
Lion's Eye Diamond
Mana Crypt
Mana Vault
Merchant Scroll
Mox Emerald
Mox Jet
Mox Pearl
Mox Ruby
Mox Sapphire
Mystical Tutor
Sol Ring
Time Walk
Timetwister
Tolarian Academy
Vampiric Tutor
Wheel of Fortune

Theory behind this is that it's tutors; the best, oldest fast mana; and unconditional, cheap draw-7s. This includes all of the P9, for tradition's sake.

So here's what's unrestricted:
Balance
Brainstorm
Chalice of the Void
Channel
Dig Through Time
Flash
Gitaxian Probe
Golgari Grave-Troll
Gush
Karn, the Great Creator
Library of Alexandria
Lodestone Golem
Lotus Petal
Memory Jar
Mental Misstep
Mind's Desire
Monastery Mentor
Mystic Forge
Narset, Parter of Veils
Necropotence
Ponder
Strip Mine
Thorn of Amethyst
Time Vault
Tinker
Treasure Cruise
Trinisphere
Windfall
Yawgmoth's Will

Do what you want. Vintage cannot be tamed.

Brass Man has suggested five-game matches.

This was a really good episode. That's not really a surprise since they're all good, but I enjoyed this one a lot.

You made a few points in passing that I've used in arguing for many, many cards to be unrestricted.

You were pleased that Fastbond opened up novel, fun budget options, for one, which I think could happen with unrestrictions as well. Power 9 is de-emphasized if other powerful cards are available. ESG and Channel go better together than Channel and Mox Pearl, for example, similar for Necropotence and Dark Ritual.

You also pointed out that Narset will be more obnoxious as a one-of than a four-of. The obnoxiousness of losing to a restricted card is a major detriment to restriction, in my opinion. Monastery Mentor is regularly game over, but at least if there are four of them I have reason to build my deck to stop them. Similar with Lodestone Golem or Chalice of the Void.

And Steve had a comment about being excited to play with new, powerful cards. We don't get to do that if players' first reactions to new strategies are to get them restricted. The format was adjusting to Narset, as you pointed out, and Karn/Forge was showing weakness to BUG when they were restricted. New cards should last longer than 6 months, let alone 2.

Ah, TMD, where "playable" so often just means "Vintage legal."

posted in Off-Topic read more

Obviously I won't stop anyone from participating in this exercise; your free time is your own. Here's my take, though. Vintage already struggles with legitimacy issues. We've all heard the arguments—it's too broken, too fast, too expensive, too elitist, too hard to learn, too unbalanced, and so on. The only reason Vintage matters at all is because it's still a Wizards sanctioned format, one that holds value because it's the oldest and all the cards are legal. The "Damn The Man" approach of creating a new B&R list because players can supposedly manage it better just makes the format a gigantic joke.

That said, have fun playing Magic.
