DM'd. The Discord and tournament are open. We're just not publishing the invite widely. All people have to do is ask.

The Team Serious Virtual Realm is planning on a U30 event in early July. This is an experimental format based on greatly raising the bar for restriction in Vintage.

If you remember the Mr. Burns Disease analogy from The Simpsons, it's like that. The current restricted list for U30 is below. If you're curious, the response to Lurrus's banning was to add Lion's Eye Diamond to the restricted list. Lurrus is legal as a four-of.

Ancestral Recall
Black Lotus
Demonic Consultation
Demonic Tutor
Imperial Seal
Lion's Eye Diamond
Mana Crypt
Mana Vault
Merchant Scroll
Mox Emerald
Mox Jet
Mox Pearl
Mox Ruby
Mox Sapphire
Mystical Tutor
Sol Ring
Time Walk
Timetwister
Tolarian Academy
Vampiric Tutor
Wheel of Fortune

Theory behind this is that it's tutors; the best, oldest fast mana; and unconditional, cheap draw-7s. This includes all of the P9, for tradition's sake.

So here's what's unrestricted:
Balance
Brainstorm
Chalice of the Void
Channel
Dig Through Time
Flash
Gitaxian Probe
Golgari Grave-Troll
Gush
Karn, the Great Creator
Library of Alexandria
Lodestone Golem
Lotus Petal
Memory Jar
Mental Misstep
Mind's Desire
Monastery Mentor
Mystic Forge
Narset, Parter of Veils
Necropotence
Ponder
Strip Mine
Thorn of Amethyst
Time Vault
Tinker
Treasure Cruise
Trinisphere
Windfall
Yawgmoth's Will

Do what you want. Vintage cannot be tamed.

Brass Man has suggested five-game matches.

I forgot to post part two of this! These were a lot of fun, and they're relevant beyond Dave being a friend of ours. Listen if you have interest in Magic's early days.

For episode 45, Geoff Moes (@ThallidTosser on Twitter), Nat Moes (@GrandpaBelcher), and Josh Chapple (@joshchapple) continue their discussion David P. Baum, longtime owner of a card and comic book store in Northern Ohio. He doesn’t have a personal Twitter account, but (Pop! the store has one. And if you’d like to support the store through the coronavirus quarantine, Pop! opened an online storefront to help get them through.

Greetings from the virtual realm! Since no one's allowed to interact in person, we decided to host a Team Serious Invitational online with (hopefully) similar amounts of fun, camaraderie, and drinking.

On Friday, to kick things off, I hosted MTG Pub Quiz covering Magic: The Gathering trivia of all kinds, including movies with Magic card titles, remembering 1993, and drinking with Team Serious. A fun time was had by all, and congratulations to jonhammack (Jon Hammack), gloriouswolfman (Kaleb Woodward), and angui_82 (Fernando Anguiano) for a commanding 62 to 50 to 49 to 47 victory. They started hot in the Magic category and even identified a random drink I pulled from Jaco's Twitter feed by name!

On Saturday, we opened the tournament. We had 24 players representing at least six countries, five rounds of Swiss, and a cut to top eight. Plenty of companions throughout the event, including seven in the knockout rounds, one deck alternating between two of them. It looked hairy as we had thought playing the entire tournament via webcam in Discord would work, but five minutes into the event Discord had other ideas. Players were quick to react and we soon had games proceeding in Discord DMs, over Zoom, and even through Cockatrice.

In the end, Zias won using Shops Vines and no companion. Thanks to everyone who played, especially those in different time zones, and congratulations to the finalists. Thanks especially to Brass Man for the inspiration, as well as for hosting and commenting from his stream. Thanks also to Jimmy McCarthy, Jerry Yang, Tyler Etters, and others for helping players figure out their webcam setups and other options.

If you want to watch the coverage, it's available on Twitch from Brass Man!

For episode 44, Geoff Moes (@ThallidTosser on Twitter), Nat Moes (@GrandpaBelcher), and Josh Chapple (@joshchapple) join David P. Baum, longtime owner of a card and comic book store in Northern Ohio. He doesn’t have a personal Twitter account, but (Pop! the store has one, as well as a Facebook page and Discord, if you’re interested.

Here’s the timestamped table of contents for your listening ease and enjoyment:
02:29 – Dave Discovers the Magic
17:39 – The First “Grand Prix” and SandCon
32:18 – Origins 1995
Total runtime – 45:39

As just a taste of the content, here's one of the first things we talk about: Dave gets his first boxes of Unlimited from a sports card dealer and sells them at a little sports card convention without knowing what they are. He opens some starters and “auctions” some singles, including Demonic Tutor. Did he sell a Black Lotus?

@ten-ten I guess the full video is no longer available on Twitch. They only keep it for two weeks if you're not an affiliate. C'est la vie. Enjoy clips on YouTube. I think there's still some fun commentary about Cats, the movie.

@ten-ten The full video (almost 10 hours of it) should be available on Twitch. Not all of it is chopped up, though. If I get time, I'll try to pull out other sections.

I'm sorry that my misplay affected you so much, its the only thing you remember from the event.

That's not true. I remember a lot and can watch the rest on Twitch. I also remember the match that had 30 minutes of shuffling.

The videos from each round are also up on YouTube under the Serious Vintage channel. Check those out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH-ba9DN4YQ&list=PL3klcfmNMPqH5nH3w4bJV3RIdUoZSOKMx

@lhc said in TSI Hazard's Birthday 5.0 2/8/2020 Results!:

I won with consult-oracle far more than I won with doomsday. Easier to set up and easier on the mana. That combo is the real deal.

I think you would also just, like, forget to cast Doomsday sometimes.

My money’s on Josh “CoffeeCup” Chapple, “The Late JC.” I know what he’s playing and it is hot.

Also hype for Twaun P. Pwnertown and Mark Trogdon showing up out of nowhere. I’m hoping for some creative solutions out of those two.

And it’s J. Pare’s M.O. to not play for years and then 5-0, 10-0 the Swiss.

There’s no shortage of talent here, but all of it is drunk. Should be a great time.

Yeah, thanks! The fun is definitely my favorite part of the format.

This was a really good episode. That's not really a surprise since they're all good, but I enjoyed this one a lot.

You made a few points in passing that I've used in arguing for many, many cards to be unrestricted.

You were pleased that Fastbond opened up novel, fun budget options, for one, which I think could happen with unrestrictions as well. Power 9 is de-emphasized if other powerful cards are available. ESG and Channel go better together than Channel and Mox Pearl, for example, similar for Necropotence and Dark Ritual.

You also pointed out that Narset will be more obnoxious as a one-of than a four-of. The obnoxiousness of losing to a restricted card is a major detriment to restriction, in my opinion. Monastery Mentor is regularly game over, but at least if there are four of them I have reason to build my deck to stop them. Similar with Lodestone Golem or Chalice of the Void.

And Steve had a comment about being excited to play with new, powerful cards. We don't get to do that if players' first reactions to new strategies are to get them restricted. The format was adjusting to Narset, as you pointed out, and Karn/Forge was showing weakness to BUG when they were restricted. New cards should last longer than 6 months, let alone 2.

Hey, thanks @craw_advantage! And thanks @nartman99 for putting the writeup together!

The whole event was a lot of fun. I'm of the opinion that more Magic players need to be more friends and family in one anothers' lives. It was great to have everyone come and celebrate the occasion and share in the excitement that Elizabeth and I have. I'll look forward to the next time, whoever we'll be celebrating and whatever event.

We're also going to have a Serious Vintage episode coming out that will include some of this. (We've been behind on recording, but I've had a good excuse.)

posted in Vintage Strategy read more

Sure! And it’s not that I think they shouldn’t play Vintage. It’s just that we seem SO far apart on what we’re getting out of the format. Like, they’re unhappy with the very things I enjoy, and I don’t know what they enjoy because they never talk about it. Some of these players don’t seem to enjoy anything.

Lately I’ve been concerned that it’s me. Maybe Vintage is headed in a direction I don’t want. Middle School and Old School have fun communities, and Legacy has powerful cards. Would that be so bad? (Insert GIF of Principal Skinner saying “No, it’s the children who are wrong.” I’m on my phone and can’t find it.)
