This event was great! I really enjoyed the chance to commentate with Randy Buehler for the first time, as well as spending time goofing around with my buddy Mark Hornung. There were a lot of huge shakeups in the final round that left the top 8 as it was, including the two 7-1-1s both getting paired down and both losing, allowing Eric to sneak into 8th seed at 8-2. I don't have access to the standings right now, but that last slot could have been any number of players, including @13NoVa, as it didn't look clear until the round settled. I was very happy with the games that I got to commentate, and hopefully my love of the format translated well over Twitch. Thank you everyone that said nice things to me and for everyone that I got to talk to, either for the first time or for the first time in a while. Please let me know if you have any feedback for me. I'm going to try to run it back next year and the audience deserves the best possible show.

RE: October 17, 2017 Banned & Restricted announcement
I'm pretty stoked that they're back to waiting a full three months between announcements.
RE: Eternal Weekend
I'm super excited to be in the booth all weekend! I'll be getting a break now and then and would love to meet some of non-Northeastern Vintage crew. I already promised some dude on Facebook I'd sign any non-Hierarch card with Noble in its name, so I guess I'll extend that invitation to anyone here (I have zero expectation, let's be honest). If you can't catch me there, catch Randy Buehler, Mark Hornung and myself on I believe twitch.tv/cardtitan.
RE: Keep or Mull?
While this is a "Keep or Mull?" thread, I'd like to touch on a deck construction point. With the current iteration of Dredge, many builds rely heavily on transformational sideboards. Whether this is Thespian's Stage and Dark Depths or Hollow One and Gurmag Angler, you will need a very real plan against these cards. While Swords to Plowshares deals with the former, Hollow One and Gurmag Angler #2 and beyond are going to crush this hand. My first go-to for any anti-Dredge sideboard right now is Pithing Needle, since shutting off Bazaar also shuts off the Hollow One "mana" and filling your yard for Gurmag Angler. It also turns off Thespian's Stage. It won't do all the work by itself, since Dredge will start discarding to hand size, but it's where I'd start.

See everyone tomorrow!
RE: Eternal Weekend for the first timer
This means if you forget your Dark Confidant trigger I'd expect that a good chunk of the field will not allow you to put it back on the stack.
If you play against Joe Brennan always force him to put it back on the stack. It might just be the fourth Leyline of the Void.
Oh Boy I Can't Wait For VSL Season 7!
How have we gotten five episodes into this season without this thread? That seems like a travesty.
Here is this season's description, as stated on the official website:
Season 7 will have 12 players:
Three times during the regular season the 12 players will be randomly divided in groups of 4 players each. All 12 players will submit decks at the same time and without knowing who is in their group. Each show will consist of one group playing a full round robin (aka 3 matches per player, 6 matches total).
At the end of 9 weeks, everyone will have played 9 matches. (The schedule won’t be symmetrical, and some players are likely to have easier/harder schedules than others, but that’s just a feature we’ve all agreed to accept.) The Top 4 records advance to the playoffs, with ties broken by playing more matches of Magic (format TBD based on the size of the tie).
The Playoffs will have the 3-seed versus the 4-seed, then the 2-seed versus that winner, then the 1-seed (aka the best record from the regular season) versus that winner. Each playoff round is best 3 out of 5 matches with players bringing 3 different decks.
We’re approaching this season as a “Brewer’s Challenge” and so there is no “relegation” and players have agreed not to play the same deck twice (during the regular season).
The players this year are as follows:
- Kevin Cron
- The Rich Shay
- Rodrigo Togores
- Reid Duke
- Rachel Agnes
- Randy Buehler
- Eric Froehlich
- Stephen Menendian
- Bob Maher
- Paul Rietzl
- Erin Campbell
- David Williams
As always, please keep discussion civil, on-topic, and exercise critical thinking. I can't wait!
RE: [XLN] Sorcerous Spyglass
I like this card. Even though it isn't taking over the format right now, just thought I'd mention, it took at least 6 months before Mental Misstep started seeing play at all. (4 Spell Pierce 0 Misstep winning champs that year) And it took several years before Gitaxian Probe started seeing regular play; you even used to be able to get away with saying Gitaxian Probe is a bad card. So one day this could be down right oppressive and restriction worthy.
Ah, simpler times when I was on the bleeding edge of Vintage innovation. Also the tournament where I shipped Ryan Glackin my other brew.
RE: [XLN] Sorcerous Spyglass
You are trading off opening hand explosiveness for a card that's pretty mediocre in mirrors where Shop players are copying each others 75s of ABR, WB, WL.
These abbreviations took me well over a minute to parse. I had to pull up a sample deck to figure out WL and I'm still not sure. Wasteland? But then you typed it out later in your post so I'm not entirely sure.
RE: So i'm going to be buying into MTGO.
@hierarchnoble Until they ban your account for reporting bugs too often, which they've done in the past.
Or for a crime wholly unrelated to Magic for which you have already served your sentence, which they've done in the past.
Or for photographing public indecency, which they've done in the past.
RE: Vintage 101: Spy VS Spyglass
Thanks for the huge shout-out, Joe! You did an amazing job mapping out the synergies and plan of the deck, and I'm glad you enjoyed the design. I enjoy reading any of your work and support your efforts, even if it's just cheering from my office chair. I look forward to seeing many more articles in the future.

Decklists will be published soon hopefully this very same week.
I can't wait!
RE: [XLN] Sorcerous Spyglass
Four decks out of the top 32 were running 2-3 Sorcerous Spyglass in their maindeck, one of which ended up taking 2nd. The total size of this event was 44 people, so if Sorcerous Spyglass scaled to this size it would be in 5.5 decks, or effectively another deck or two. Vintage isn't exactly known for its fast adoption of role-playing cards such as this, so to see an eighth of the metagame already running it makes me hopeful for its place in the metagame.
Also of note, The Rich Shay showcased the card's power last night when he locked out two of Randy's Flooded Strands on the first turn, effectively winning him the game right there. This may pique the interest of those who get their metagame information from the VSL.
