I would rather play in a world with no perfect information as the guess/bluff is an important part of the game in my mind. That being said, i think the card is well balanced.
I would not play it in MUD since the opportunity/tempo loss is not worth what you may gain. OK, you might hit a fetchland or something critical, but how many times you will find a hand with moxen or bilands or nothing relevant to name ? Nowadays, MUD has no other choice but try to go as quick as possible and won't change its plan whatever he sees in the opponent hand. As a MUD player, i rather blind name Dack with a revoker than play that card.
On the other, it could be an interesting card in STAX. I am not yet sold on the card but it could be something that might lead to viable STAX decks (maybe not yet but with future cards). In close games, you often find yourself in front of a critical choice : must you keep on putting the opponent out of the game or can you afford for one turn to play card that will makes you win later (crucible for exemple). It is even more important with red-stax IMHO.
I am not sure what is the future of this card but i will definitively get a playset to be on the safe side. ;)
Thanks to all who showed for the turnout we had. We had 24 show up. Unfortunately we did not get the 40 for timetwister but while we were sitting at about 22 with 1/2 hour to go and an unknown on the way Jason agreed that if we hit 30 we'd still do the timetwister. When we got the final count we took a vote to chip in some extra cash to make the time twister doable and hit about 50% in favor. So no go.
For prize support Jason opted NOT to scale the prize support down. The initial posting was prize support based on 30 players at $30 a piece to scale accordingly and Jason still gave out the fully posted support despite not reaching 30 players. So a big thanks to Jason for taking care of his player base.
For my own report I did about as well as some other regulars in the area - which is to say not good at all. Was a rough day. I don't have my sheets with me at work but from memory:
Round 1 vs UW Landstill mentor
I was a little impressed as this was close to the list I ran at the last tournament that got some looks. If I had just run my old list... we figured we might actually still be there playing. As it was both games were long and drawn out with my opponent resolving early standstills with a never ending supply of factors in play. A sided in propaganda (thanks for the suggestion Joe Brennan) gave me a fighting chance in game 2 but the draws were just dead with tons of mana and little business. For example he plopped a turn 2 standstill. I did a turn 3 time twister which he couldn't counter, effectively negating his standstill. My 7 were notion thief, mox pearl and 5 lands. With 3 more lands drawn over the next 5 turns. Still my opponent played well and made no discernable mistakes for me to try and take advantage of. I had some resources and when I tried to utilize them he shut me down pretty effectively
round 2 vs oath
No clue what I'm up against but my opening hand round 1 was time twister, notion thief, 2 lands, sol ring, gush and brainstorm. I'm on the draw and draw no counter back up but after turn 2 my opponent had played most of his hand as land and artifact acceleration so I think I'm doing fine to hit an EoT turn 3 thief and my turn 3 hit twister. Except on my opponents turn he plays show & tell which I can't counter. I drop notion thief. He drops emrakul. :( Still on my turn I hit the twister to draw 19 cards and hopefully combo out on him. Out of the 14 cards I had a gush and gushed into a gush. So I drew 20 cards that turn in my main phase. 16 of them were lands or mana sources. :(
Game 2 and 3 went much better with him digging for oath and me getting early mentors in both games. Game 3 ended with him on an orchard and hitting a show & tell to put grizzlebrand into play. I had clamp and mentor and cycled thru my deck until I found Jace, played jace, bounced his gris and he scooped after drawing 7 from gris and getting nothing.
Round 3 vs bob mentor
Game 1 started out ok with neither of us showing much on turns 1 and 2 so I demonic tutored up a mentor on turn 3. On his turn 3 he played caverns, mentor. On his turn 4 he played a second mentor. That was pretty much it. Game 2 I mulliganed to 5 seeing 1 land in my 7 card hand, none in my 6 and 1 in my 5. He doesn't race out of the gate like game 1 but still resolves an early mentor and I don't have time to crawl back in.
Round 4 vs bob mentor
I actually felt these were the best games of the day for me, despite another loss. An early bob both games eventually buried me in his card advantage. But in both games 1 and 2 both of us drew a good mix of lands and spells, played well and had quite a bit of back and forth. In game 2 at one point he had his board loaded with a bob, a notion thief ( played in response to my ancestral which was soul crushing but Iwas able to work around it eventually) and a mentor with a handful of tokens. I had a supreme verdict in hand and top decked a 2nd white source. Unfortunately his card advantage from Bob left him with a hand that was able to quickly recover. And in both games he had a somewhat early strip mine which he made very unfortunate (for me, but fantastic for him) decisions on which lands to go after. I honestly think despite everything else in game 2 (thief to my recall, quick recovery from my supreme verdict etc) I may have won that game if I hadn't lost my underground sea. So big kudos to my round 4 opponent for some great play.
round 5 vs Bye
I don't remember much of this match. It went by so fast. I don't even remember turning my slip in. I really hope my opponent did.
What I learned from the day - its time to retire mystic remora. This has been a powerhouse for me for the past few months. But the meta is shifting to more creatures and quite frankly when my opponent plays a mentor, a notion thief, a bob, thalia or any white weenie or any of the bug fish we're starting to see in my area I almost always would much rather have not spent mana on a cumulative upkeep and would rather have had that remora be something else. Time to put it away for a while.
