Here's my new Academy deck for 2017. Card explanations are next to the cards.

Mental Misstep, while a good four of; can potentially hurt more than what it does with trick countering a spell.

Well TPS has a long history of being one of the most dominant decks in MtG history.
It has the tools, skills, and atleast to some extent the flair needed to get it over the hump.

With recent restrictions like Chalice of the Void and Lodestone Golem; Stax has took a nosedive in tournaments so it's time to dust off a old deck of mine.

The cards selected show the raw power of TPS, and also show how it can be versatile in the SB with anti Combo, Control, and Aggro.

3 Chain of Vapor- Anti Control
4 Echoing Truth- Anti Control
4 Yixlid Jailer- Anti Aggro

The sideboard is completely customizable. Within the colors blue and black

Card explanations are in the dashes next to the cards. Now the problem is whether to use Gifts Ungiven, or try and use some alternative method for a tutor or combo enabler. The deck needs 3 more blue sources to be at tip top condition. Maybe a unrestricted brainstorm would help. I had a list earlier about TPS but forgot the one of cards it used. I guess slot something like Treasure Cruise, Dig Through Time or possibly something like Windfall.

Now that Yawgmoth's Bargain is unrestricted this deck needs a massive overhaul or a few slight tweaks. I'll update the original post with a modified build. Instead of adding 3 Blue sources we get x3 more Bargains. Definitely a fair trade on our part of the combo game.

So I decided to throw together a brand new Dark Times list for old times sake. If you look closer you'll notice a lot of differences between this list and all the others you've come across in the past both in the main deck and sideboard.

Well unto the list:

4 Dark Confidant
4 Vampire Hexmage
4 Dark Ritual
4 Wasteland
1 Imperial Seal
4 Dark Depths
1 Demonic Consultation
1 Demonic Tutor
4 Null Rod
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Jet
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Yawgmoth's Will
4 Thoughtseize
1 Strip Mine
1 Necropotence
10 Swamp
4 Duress
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4 Liliana of the Veil
4 Encroach

SB: 4 Emissary of Despair
SB: 4 Leyline of the Void
SB: 3 Sadistic Sacrament
SB: 4 Engineered Plague

Card Choices:
Lotus and Jet are for early game mana accel. Theres no Petal because we want our mana to stick for as long as possible until we can Null Rod. Or if you wish include petal and cut Urborg. Urborg provides a key 20th land standard for Null Rod decks, while Petal gives you another way to combo on the 1st turn if you happen to draw it. ( When I say combo I mean use Vampire into Dark Depths pass the turn.) Urborg was decided on mainly because it always taps for mana under a Null Rod from your opponent and is a single Legendary land in the list. It's our Tolarian Academy so to speak and in a large scale tournament I would use it instead of Lotus Petal. Urborg is our Wasteland Vampire Hexmage mana.

The rest of the list is Standard Dark Times. Encroach is for more Wasteland like disruption that comes in the form of hand information. Cabal Therapy can also fill this slot or Yixlid Jailer, Phyrexian Negator. I sided with Encroach because it's the most disruptive. Liliana of the Veil can be swapped out for Sinkhole or Hymn to Tourach. Since it does both at certain times in the game I thought why not just keep it since we need a way to rack up card advantage in the long game under a Null Rod.

For the side board I've spiced things up a bit by including Engineered Plague and Sadistic Sacrament. Sadistic Sacrament is for rogue Time Vault decks that linger in the metagame and Storm Combo; it also handles Bomberman and many other decks that rely on just a few cards to win.

Enguneered Plague is for Elves, Goblins, and Fish. ( Fish decks gained a rise in popularity since it's big win at Vintage Champs). Engineered Plague also handles Guli's GW Humans deck.

So that's all for now folks, now we just need to wait for the new expansions to come out to give us some new Black cards to play with and we'll be just fine.
